Message From Our President

Welcome to the final days of summer, when going back to school is the talk around town!

At IABC Dallas, we have lots of learning opportunities for you in the coming weeks. I’m really excited that we will soon launch the chapter’s first program for Special Interest Groups (SIGs). This will allow smaller, more intimate and informal discussions to happen around specific areas of interest, such as digital or crisis communications. We’re currently working on organizing this program, so let me know if you’d like to participate! Otherwise, look for information on how you can join a SIG in the coming month or two.

This month, our professional development lunch will focus on crisis communications. We’ve certainly seen a number of interesting case studies this past year to learn from: Pepsi, United Airlines and more. IABC International has also recently provided free member webinars on crisis communications. You can view the replays of these webinars on the IABC website.

Lastly, be sure to save the date for our annual Fall Conference, set to take place on October 13. If you’re interested in having your organization be a sponsor for this event, please let me know.

As always, feel free to reach out to me or any of the Dallas chapter board members with questions or suggestions. Try to stay cool, my friends!

Melissa Hancock is the new president of the Dallas chapter of IABC. She is also a vice president at Weber Shandwick, one of the world's leading public relations firms. »

Adrienne Ciletti, one of 9 IABC Dallas members who attended this year's World Conference, said the event was inspiring. She most enjoyed Monday's keynote speech by Jon Iwata, vice president of marketing for IBM, who discussed the emergence of artificial intelligence, known as AI, and its potential for so much change in our world. "Jon shared some great stories about the development of Watson," Ciletti said. "More importantly, he challenged us as communicators to prepare now for how we'll address society’s questions about our companies and organizations using AI. Ready or not, it’s coming."

Get Recognized Regionally

IABC Southern Region’s 2017 Silver Quill Awards is a chance for regional communication professionals to step up and be recognized for their unlimited potential.

Including 28 streamlined categories, which align with the international IABC Gold Quill Awards, the Silver Quill competition provides an opportunity to level up to the next competition—without rewriting the work plan. Rather than being judged against one another, all entries are evaluated on their own merits using the same criteria as IABC’s Global Blue Ribbon Panel. The Silver Quill competition is a great opportunity to take your work to the next level and advance your career as you receive valuable feedback from seasoned professionals. Take advantage of this chance to elevate your thinking, hone your skills and showcase your award-worthy work!

Who can enter?

Unlimited Entrants: All communicators, including students, in IABC’s Southern Region, which includes all of Texas.

What can I enter?

Unlimited Projects: Work implemented, published or broadcast between January 1, 2016 and the day of submission. Entries may be large or small projects from in-house non-profit, corporate, government, and educational departments, agencies, consultants, or sole practitioners. Multiple entries per entrant are welcome.

What's the deadline?

All entries are due August 16, and no entries will be accepted after August 23.
